UN warns of conflict in South Sudan amid reports of VP Riek Machar’s arrest

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has called for calm following reports of First Vice President Riek Machar’s arrest in Juba. UNMISS chief Nicholas Haysom warned that renewed conflict could undo seven years of progress and push the country back into war.

Haysom warned that South Sudan stands at a crossroads—either relapsing into conflict or advancing toward peace and democracy, as envisioned in the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement. He cautioned that renewed fighting would not only harm South Sudan but also destabilize the wider region.
