Tanzania allegedly blocks access to X amid political unrest

NetBlocks reports that major Internet Service Providers in Tanzania, including Airtel, Vodacom, Halotel, Tigo, and TTCL, have blocked access to X (formerly Twitter), making the platform inaccessible nationwide. Restrictions include the Image Content Delivery Network (CDN), Mobile API, and media uploads, sparking concerns of a potential complete shutdown.

This move coincides with growing political tensions, following a police warning about opposition party Chadema’s alleged plans to raid stations holding political prisoners. The government had earlier arrested Chadema’s chairman, Tundu Lissu, and the head of the youth wing. Social activist Maria Sarungi Tsehai urged the public to spread the names of political prisoners across social media to secure their release.
