Nigeria aims for global tech leadership with new initiative

The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched a new program in partnership with the tech company Gluwa as part of its digital transformation strategy. The initiative aims to equip 1,000 citizens annually with skills in artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and other technologies. This effort aligns with President Tinubu’s agenda to revolutionize the country’s digital technology sector.

During the AI Expertise Blockchain and Technology Training and Outsourcing Initiative event on July 23, 2024, in Dutse, Jigawa State, Vice-President Kashim Shettima emphasized that the program’s goal is for Nigeria to not just catch up but surpass other countries in technology. While the training of 1,000 individuals is a positive step, Nigeria faces significant challenges in competing with global tech leaders like the United States and China, which have vast resources and advanced workforces.

Shettima assured that the initiative would enable beneficiaries to join the global workforce and drive innovation within Nigeria. He outlined the government’s broader vision of establishing tech hubs nationwide to power economic growth and transform Nigeria into a leading destination for technology outsourcing, blending global expertise with local talent.
