Nathaniel Fick was appointed US ambassador at large of Cyberspace Policy and Digital Policy
Related topics: Digital diplomacy Diplomatic policy analysis
Nathaniel Fick was appointed US ambassador at large of Cyberspace Policy and Digital Policy. His new title tries to balance tensions between cyber and digital. Will he become a digital or cyber ambassador?
It’s also interesting to see that he frames the digital foreign policy approach around the traditional multilateral ‘trinity’ architecture of security, economy, and human rights.
SECURITY: He reiterates the traditional US approach to cybersecurity. A new element is that it brings cybercrime in proximity to cybersecurity which the USA has kept separate in international relations.
ECONOMY: The focus is on the free flow of data, open/transparent standards, multistakeholder internet governance, and Open RAN.
HUMAN RIGHTS: He calls for digital freedom and inclusion.
He also plans to develop institutional capacity in US diplomacy to follow digital/cyber topics.
