A new type of sovereignty: Liberland in the metaverse

The metaverse may facilitate new types of sovereignty beyond territory-based states.

In the centre of this debate is the Free Republic of Liberland, an unrecognised libertarian microstate between Croatia and Serbia declared by right-wing Czech activist Vít Jedlička, which has not received recognition by the United Nations, but may start existing in the metaverse.

Liberland founders wish to have a country with no laws, no regulations, no gun control, or even taxes, and so far has around 7,000 registered residents.

The British architecture and design firm Zaha Hadid Architects began designing Liberland for the metaverse, but it remains to be seen if Liberland will trigger a new type of sovereignty and governance.
