Tech attache briefing: WSIS+20 and AI governance negotiations – Updates and next steps

16 April 2025

Geneva - In Situ

The event is part of a series of regular briefings the Geneva Internet Platform (GIP) is delivering for diplomats at permanent missions and delegations in Geneva following digital policy issues. It is an invitation-only event.

Our April 2025 briefing for Geneva-based diplomats will focus on two major processes, outlining recent developments and next steps:

  • WSIS+20 review: We will reflect on the outcomes of deliberations at the Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD), explore the next steps in the review process, and highlight some key issues that are likely to take centre stage in upcoming debates (such as synergies between the implementation and review of WSIS outcomes and the Global Digital Compact, and the future of the Internet Governance Forum).
  • Negotiations on the International Scientific Panel on AI and the Global Dialogue on AI Governance: In March, a zero draft resolution was released, outlining the terms of reference and modalities for the establishment and functioning of these two new mechanisms mandated by the Global Digital Compact. As the intergovernmental process advances in New York, we will review the provisions of the zero draft and explore expectations for both the Panel and the Dialogue.
