Diplo at the APrIGF 2019

16 July 2019 - 19 July 2019

Vladivostok, Russia

The 10th Asia Pacific Regional Internet Governance Forum (APrIGF) is hosted by the Coordination Center for TLD RU and will be held from 16-19 July 2019 in Vladivostok, Russia.

APrIGF is one of the key regional initiatives on Internet governance. By adopting the multistakeholder approach as its core principle, APrIGF serves as a platform for discussion, exchange, and collaboration at a regional level, and also where possible to aggregate national IGF discussions, and ultimately, advance Internet governance development in the Asia Pacific region. The annual conference programme consists of three sessions: the pre-event meeting; the core conference; and, the youth IGF camp. This year’s forum will be held under the theme ‘Enabling a Safe, Secure and Universal Internet for All in Asia Pacific’.

DiploFoundation will take part in the following sessions:

1. Day 1, 17 July 2019 at 15.30 – 17.00: WS30. The ethics behind computing machines: Raising awareness of digital talents

In co-operation with the University of Indonesia, Diplo is co-hosting a session on the ethics behind computing machines. There will be four highly reputable speakers from the Asia Pacific region with excellent knowledge and expertise on this issue. This topic is in line with the idea that problems caused by the adoption of emerging technologies are rooted in the education of young software engineers, who do not have adequate exposure to the ethics behind big data and the computing power they manage. Consequently, they fail to anticipate the greater social impact that the software they build has.

Examples from Indonesia, Singapore, and South Korea will be discussed. Suggestions to problem-based learning with case studies and a multidisciplinary approach are expected to be the outcomes of this session.

2. Day 3, 19 July 2019 at 14.00 – 15.00: WS12. Coping with misinformation in an era of information deluge: Who is responsible?

Diplo’s Shita Laksmi will be among the speakers in this session hosted by CCAOI, India. Laksmi will share the current challenge of misinformation in Indonesia, along with initiatives taken in Indonesia to counter misinformation. The session will then deliberate on the adequacy of the initiatives taken so far, and suggest further steps to be taken,

3. Day 3, 19 July 2019 at 16.00 – 18.00: Closing plenary: The role of Asia Pacific Internet governance and multistakeholder participation in the global IGF & ceremony

The panel discussion will analyse the role of global and regional Internet governance (IG) processes (the Internet Governance Forum Secretariat, APrIGF); the role of supporting organisations such as the Internet Governance Forum Support Association (IGFSA); as well as organisations that play a role in capacity building, such as APNIC, DiploFoundation, and the Internet Society. The panel will also discuss the co-ordination mechanisms available to support IG discussions across the region, as well as financing and advocacy.

Diplo’s Tereza Horejsova will discuss global training and capacity building in IG, her views on the Asia Pacific’s engagement, and share examples of organisations that co-fund and support such efforts.
