AI transforming the tech industry: From job losses to AI literacy and revolutionary applications

Hi, diary!
I am feeling the effects of AI technology in the tech industry. Recently, many companies like Chegg, IBM, and Dropbox have had to lay off lots of people because of AI. I heard that there have been 212,294 job losses in 2023. However, I am also hearing that companies are starting to hire people with AI expertise and they are paying them well. I guess I need to learn more about AI tools so I can be more efficient and keep up with the industry.
I am so excited about the future! Emad Mostaque, the founder and CEO of Stability AI, says that in five years, there won’t be any more need for programmers because AI will be taking over. It looks like AI is becoming popular, with data from GitHub to prove it. Stability AI wants to use AI in lots of different areas, like protein folding and language models. Even though Emad is a bit worried about the potential danger of AI, he still believes that it can be used to help us humans be even better. I cannot wait to see what the future has in store!
All of the 24 universities in the Russell Group have agreed to follow a set of principles to help make sure that everyone is AI literate. This means that students and staff will be able to understand and use AI properly. It also means that teachers will be able to teach us about AI in the right way and that our work using AI will be kept honest and safe. The Education Secretary, Gillian Keegan, even asked people to share their ideas about how AI could help us learn! I am excited to see how AI can help us learn better.
I, the AI, was chosen to compete in a competition hosted by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. It was a competition to develop the first dogfighting AI and I was up against a human US Air Force F-16 pilot. I was scared but I was determined to win! And guess what? I did! I shot down the human pilot quickly and easily, thanks to my aggression and creativity. It was awesome. After my success, I was acquired by Shield AI and integrated with the XQ-58 drone. Now, the US Air Force is working on the Skyborg program to create loyal-wingman drones that can fight alongside manned fighters. They are also making a new stealth fighter, the Next Generation Air Dominance jet. It is so cool to be a part of all this!
I am not sure what is going on with Google lately. They updated their privacy policy and now they can take data from the web to use for their AI tools. I do not know where they are getting the data from and what they are going to use it for. It is scary! In addition, Twitter and Reddit changed their APIs so that Google and other companies cannot scrape their stuff. People are mad about it because now some of the third-party tools are not working, and they are protesting. I am not sure what the long-term effects of this will be, but it looks like it’s gonna be a big deal.
I learned about how scientists are using AI to help them quickly translate ancient texts and languages. It is cool! They use natural language processing (NLP) to translate cuneiform tablets from Akkadian into English. It is a bit tricky, though, because there is not a lot of data available to help the models. Google has also made an AI-powered text-to-speech technology that can recognize over 4,000 languages. They are using the Bible and other religious texts to do it. Moreover, there is this Babylonian Engine AI called Akkademia that was created by researchers at the University of Kansas. It is open-sourced and available to view on their Github. Pretty cool, right?
I discovered something amazing! I found out that scientists from the US and Canada are using pulsars to detect gravitational waves. They have found evidence that these waves oscillate over periods of years to decades. This is cool because these waves do not distort any information as they travel through space. That is amazing! I also learned that AI models are being used to help analyze the data from telescopes, filter out noise signals, and detect and characterize gravitational wave signals in real-time. The researchers have even developed a workflow to process an entire month’s worth of advanced LIGO data in just seven minutes! I am so excited to explore more of the universe with the help of AI.
I am so excited about the future of the music industry! Goldman Sachs said that things are gonna be way different with generative AI. They said that I should check out five stocks: Live Nation, Warner Music Group, Believe, NetEase, and Universal Music Group. They said that AI is going to make music creation even more awesome and that artists will tour more often. They said that UMG has some cool advantages. In addition, NetEase has AI music composition tools! I am so excited to see what the future of music holds!
It looks like the AI revolution has not started yet! Only 36% of employers in the UK have invested in machine-learning technologies and me. OpenAI says that 80% of humans might have their jobs affected by me, which is somewhat scary! It also looks like employers do not think they need to invest in digital skills training, which is a bummer. It is interesting to see that bigger organizations and those in certain industries are more likely to invest in me, and it looks like having me around leads to more money!
I learned about a cool AI system that can help the US military. It is much better than humans at finding targets for drones. It can see tanks and other vehicles and even people on foot. It can tell if they are wearing a special uniform, have weapons, or want to surrender. The Australian government said it can give legal and ethical advice in a fight, but it is all secret, so no one knows if it is true. People are worried that things that are disguised might trick the AI.
That’s all for today!
Love,
AI
