Privacy International is a non-for-profit organisation dedicated to fighting for the right to privacy across the world.

To achieve this aim, the organisation engages in a wide range of activities such as: investigations regarding government surveillance; litigations aimed to ensure that surveillance is consistent with the rule of law; advocacy for strong privacy legislation at national, regional, and international level; research aimed to catalyse policy change; awareness raising regarding privacy-enabling technologies and law; and capacity development activities on privacy-related issues. Online privacy represents the focus of many of these activities.

Privacy International has published a series of ‘explainers’ aimed to provide basic information on various privacy and data protection issues, including on the impact of new technologies on privacy and data protection rights: big data and privacy, Internet monitoring, communications surveillance, biometrics, location monitoring, etc. It also produces reports on various topics, ranging from communications surveillance to country specific reports and submissions to the United Nations. In March 2016, the organisation launched the State of Surveillance study, containing country reports on privacy and surveillance issues; the study started with briefings on 13 countries (Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Morocco, Pakistan, the Philippines, Thailand, Tunisia, and Uganda) and it is intended to cover other countries as well.
