LACNIC is one of the five Regional Internet Registries (RIRs), the organisations that manage the allocation and registration of Internet number resources - Internet protocol (IP) addresses and autonomous system (AS) numbers - within a particular region of the world.

LACNIC assigns and administers Internet numbering resources (IPv4, IPv6), Autonomous System Numbers, Reverse Resolution and other resources for Latin America and the Caribbean. Other technical services provided by LACNIC include: management of the Whois regional service, cryptographic authentication, DNS/reverse resolution, and RPKI certification.

The centre also contributes to Internet development in the region through an active cooperation policy, promoting and defending the regional community's interests and helping create conditions that will allow the Internet to become an effective instrument for social inclusion and economic development in the region.
