The African Union (AU) was conceived in September 1999 by the Organisation of African Unity to foster integration and address challenges posed by globalization. Officially established in 2002, the African Union’s objectives encompass fostering unity and solidarity among African countries, expediting political and socio-economic integration, defending human and peoples’ rights, advocating for sustainable development across economic, social, and cultural domains, and stimulating research, particularly in the fields of science and technology.

Additionally, the AU addresses digital policy matters and it is also engaged in internet governance forums at both global and regional levels.
