Protocol and e-politeness for the internet era

27 September 2013

Online

Has the Internet changed our view of what is polite and what is not? In diplomacy, this question is particularly relevant. Politeness (or the lack of it) can have serious consequences. It can be seen as part of diplomatic signalling, leading to all sorts of unexpected developments. The webinar on 27 September 2013 (12.45 GMT / 14.45 CET) will address the following questions:

    • What is the impact of the Internet on e-politeness?
    • What is the impact of e-mail and Twitter communication on written diplomatic language?
    • Are rituals and formalities of traditional protocol obsolete in the highly informal Internet era?
    • What is the importance of social and cultural contexts in e-communication?
    • How can we be e-polite?

The webinar is organised in partnership with Istituto Diplomatico of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
