Capacity Development in Multilateral Diplomacy for Small and Development States (CD Multi)

The Capacity Development Programme in Multilateral Diplomacy for Small and Developing Countries (CD Multi) is currently accepting applications for two online courses on Geneva-related multilateral diplomacy. If you are a diplomat, government official, or from civil socieity in a small and developing African or Caribbean country, please consider applying for CD Multi-Africa or CD Multi-Carib. The online courses start on 31 October 2017; apply by 10 October. Diplomats and other stakeholders from the Pacific Islands are encouraged to view the criteria for travel funding for multilateral events in Geneva. The programme is funded by the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland.

Last few places available – Education Diplomacy Online Course

Don’t miss the chance to attend the second session of the online course in Education Diplomacy, offered by Diplo and the Center for Education Diplomacy. Education and development are rapidly being shaped by the influence of new actors, international policy, funding structures, and the proliferation of initiatives. This interactive online course presents the concept of Education Diplomacy in depth, considers the broader impact it may have on education, and allows participants to become more effective and responsive to the dynamic landscape of education. The next course starts on 26 September 2016 and there are just a few places left. Partial scholarships are available for selected candidates from developing countries who are active in the field of Education Diplomacy. 2017 Master/Postgraduate Diploma in Contemporary Diplomacy

Diplo is accepting applications for the 2017 Master/Postgraduate Diploma in Contemporary Diplomacy, and the Master/Postgraduate Diploma in Contemporary Diplomacy with an Internet Governance specialisation. These unique postgraduate programmes, offered in cooperation with the University of Malta, include a 10-day residential workshop in Malta followed by 16–20 months of online learning. Scholarships covering 20–50% of the Postgraduate Diploma fee are available for applicants from small and developing states. The programme starts 1 February 2017. The application deadline is 1 October 2016 for international applicants and 15 November 2016 for Maltese applicants.

Thanks to support from the government of Malta, partial scholarships are available for applicants from developing countries to attend upcoming Diplo online courses. Digital policy briefings for Geneva-based ambassadors and diplomats

DiploFoundation and the Geneva Internet Platform welcomed Geneva-based Ambassadors for a briefing on digital policy, led by Dr Jovan Kurbalija, on 7 September 2016. The briefing was aimed at ambassadors who had recently presented their credentials in Geneva, and included the IG Landscape Tour at the Attic of the WMO building in Geneva, seat of the Geneva Internet Platform. A second briefing for diplomats and other members of the diplomatic community will be held on 20 September. Learn more and register to join.

Join us: Inclusive Digital Trade and Sustainable Development

Inclusive Digital Trade and Sustainable Development: Exploring Creative Solutions and Ways Forward is the title of a session organised by the Geneva Internet Platform and DiploFoundation as part of the 2016 World Trade Organization (WTO) Public Forum. The session will take place on 29 September, at the WTO premises, Room B, from 13:00 to 14:30 CEST (11:00-12:30 UTC). The 2016 WTO Public Forum will take place on 27-29 September, and will feature discussions on how to ensure that trade benefits everyone, with a particular emphasis on enabling women, innovative start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises, to take advantage of the opportunities provided by trade. The Geneva Internet Platform will also be reporting live during the forum. Learn more.

WebDebate: The art and science of negotiation training

Can negotiation skills be taught? Some argue that they cannot; they are only acquired through practice. But while it is true that any skill is honed through deliberative practice, Prof. Raymond Saner, teacher of international and multistakeholder negotiations at the University of Basel, and Prof. Paul Meerts, visiting professor in international negotiation analysis at the College of Europe in Bruges, believe that teaching negotiation is not only possible but absolutely crucial. Prof. Saner and Prof. Meerts were the special guests of our September WebDebate, moderated by Diplo director Dr Jovan Kurbalija, which focused on why and how to teach negotiation. What’s been happening in Diplo’s blogsphere

Diplo’s Sorina Teleanu looks at the recent G20 Leaders Summit from the digital policy perspective in her recent blog post. She finds that there are commitments to policies and actions in several key areas: access and digital divide, emerging technologies, trust and security, human rights, intellectual property rights, economic aspects of digital policy, and capacity development. In Internet and analogies: Riding a bus through the submarine fibre, Diplo’s Valdimir Radunovic explores analogies for understanding the Internet. In order to explain the sending of data packages through fibre optic cables, he finds that images of highways, lanes, cars, busses, and passengers are useful for highlighting different aspects.
