Multilateral Diplomacy for Pacific Island States
The Capacity Development Programme for Pacific Island States (CD Pacific) aims to strengthen the participation of Pacific Island states in International-Geneva-related multilateral diplomacy. The programme combines the convenience of tutored online learning and research for geographically dispersed participants with the immediate benefits of face-to-face coaching and policy immersion in Geneva. The online learning phase will start in January 2014 and participation is fully funded by the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Diplomats and officials from Pacific Island states are invited to read more and apply online at the project website by 30 November 2013.
Online Diploma Course in Humanitarian Diplomacy
We are accepting applications for the next session of the Humanitarian Diplomacy online diploma course, offered by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and DiploFoundation. The course willl start the week of 17 February 2014. This 12-week course, led by Ambassador Christopher Lamb, will extend the knowledge base and develop practical skills of current and future practitioners in humanitarian diplomacy and policy. Introduction to Internet Governance
Internet Governance (IG) may be more important to you than you realise.
Have you been reading and worrying about the Snowden revelations? Does online surveillance concern you and your colleagues? These are important IG issues. Learning more about IG will help you understand these personal and professional issues, and what can and should be done about them. Net neutrality? Privacy in online storage? Guidelines for cross-border Internet issues? How can regulators enhance and protect without interfering with the innovative principles that are the core of the Internet? Diplo's Introduction to Internet Governance online course will give you a foundation for discussing and addressing these issues. The next course starts the week of 17 February. The Asia-Europe Public Diplomacy Training Initiative was mentioned by the Swiss Minister of Foreign Affairs at the biannual meeting of ASEM foreign ministers held in New Delhi last week. Diplo faculty in the news. Late last month, HE Dr Alex Sceberras Trigona presented his credentials as Permanent Representative of the Republic of Malta to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in Geneva. Alex has been involved with DiploFoundation since its inception and is an active member of our faculty.
Webinar: International Law for Diplomats
How does international law affect the duties and foreign affairs work of diplomats? How can the diplomat have a positive impact on the creation and implementation of international law? This interactive webinar will discuss how international law is important to the work of a diplomat on a daily basis, looking at questions such as: ‘When I act as a diplomat, what effect can those actions have on my home country? Is what I say or write somehow binding upon my country? What do I need to be careful about?’

IGF MAG renewal process for 2014 now open
Diplo is once again supporting the engagment of community members in the IGF’s Multistakeholder Advisory Group (MAG) renewal process for 2014. Individuals interested in serving on the MAG are encouraged to post their self-nominations on Diplo’s community portal, www.diplointernetgovernance.org, by 21 November. The community will then give their preferences for the nominees, and the names of five individuals chosen on the basis of the community poll and other criteria, will be forwarded to the UN DESA as community-endorsed nominations. Polling will take place 22-29 November. Community members are encouraged to engage in this process. Details about the IGF’s call for MAG renewal, and Diplo’s community endorsement process is available here.
Diplo, HIVOS launch IG courses for MENA participants
Diplo and HIVOS have just launched two advanced courses in Internet governance and policy in collaboration with the Association for Progressive Communications (APC). The courses form part of HIVOS’s training programme for participants from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). The advanced courses are a continuation of the foundation course Introduction to Internet Governance which has just concluded successfully.
