Call for Applications: April 2007 Online Courses
We are currently accepting applications for the upcoming short online courses starting in April 2007:

Multilateral Diplomacy

Courses allow working diplomats and others involved in international relations to continue their education by learning about new topics in the field of diplomacy, or to expand and refresh their knowledge of more traditional topics. Courses require 10 weeks of part-time study, typically 6 to 8 hours per week. Successful participants receive a postgraduate level certificate from DiploFoundation.
NOTE – only a few places are left in 21st Century Diplomacy. We recommend that you register soon if you wish to attend this course.

Inauguration of 'Diplomacy Island' in Second Life (6 March 2007 at 15.00 GMT)
Second Life is a three-dimensional virtual world built and owned by its residents. Since opening to the public in 2003, it has grown rapidly and currently has over 4 million inhabitants from around the “real” world.
Diplo is announcing the launch of “Diplomacy Island” which will take place in Second Life on March 6 at 15.00 GMT. “Diplomacy Island” will be a virtual location where diplomats, academics, and researchers can meet to discuss various issues related to diplomacy. Diplomacy Island will very soon host the first virtual embassies.
How to find Diplo in Second Life
If you are registered in Second Life, you can find Diplomacy Island by teleporting your avatar (character).
If you are not registered you can follow the registration procedure.
Internet and Diplomacy
In collaboration with the Graduate Institute of International Studies and the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation, DiploFoundation recently organized a seminar on Internet and Diplomacy at the Graduate Institute in Geneva. Many of the Geneva-based diplomatic community and members of the advisory group of the Internet Governance Forum attended. Ambassador Nitin Desai, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Advisor for Internet Governance, presented a keynote speech in which he reflected on his broad experience in the Internet governance process and in other multilateral activities. Following his introduction, a short presentation was given by students from the Institute’s course on Technology and Diplomacy. For more details, visit the IG website.
Diplo 2006 Internet Governance Capacity Building Programme Papers
As part of the 2006 Internet Governance Capacity Building Programme, teams of researchers investigated issues of particular concern to developing countries and wrote summary papers of their studies. This collaborative research was conducted entirely online. One of the main objectives of the initiative was to facilitate the involvement of academics and researchers from developing countries in the global Internet governance debate. The resulting research papers are now accessible online. Links to individual papers may be found at the IG website.
Diplomacy of Micro-States
Micro-states are the smallest and often weakest members of the international community. With little political or economic power, diplomacy may be their only means to have an effect in international concerns. In a recent study, The Diplomacy of Micro-States, Ali Naseer Mohamed from the Republic of Maldives examines the value of resident embassies abroad to micro-states, concluding that the resident embassy is indispensable in the diplomacy of these states.
