E-Diplomacy: Online Discussion and Malta Conference
Please join our online discussion on e-diplomacy, which will lead to a conference in Malta on e-diplomacy during 3 – 4 June 2010. This e-diplomacy initiative focuses on the Internet and on information and communication technology-driven changes in the conduct of diplomacy and international relations. It addresses a wide variety of questions starting from simple, relatively straightforward ones, such as “Should diplomats blog?” to very complex questions seeking a deeper understanding of the social and political implications of e-diplomacy. The latter may include, “How does the Internet and communication technology affect the organisation and function of diplomatic services?” For information about themes, the Malta conference, online discussions and more, please visit the E-Diplomacy website.
New Courses for 2010
In 2010 we’re pleased to introduce two new courses: Consular Diplomacy and Multilateral Diplomacy II: Current Issues in the UN. This innovation is the result of our survey of partner ministries of foreign affairs and alumni in 2009, which highlighted new areas of work that our colleagues wanted us to introduce. We worked with a team of highly experienced diplomacy practitioners to develop the courses, which offer participants theory and practical guidance.
Consular Diplomacy starts the week of 28 June 2010. The application deadline (certificate course only in 2010) is May 24.
Multilateral Diplomacy II: Current Issues in the United Nations starts the week of 26 July 2010. The application deadline for a certificate course is 21 June, while the University of Malta credit course application deadline is 24 May.

Professional Development Workshops
Language and Influence (22-24 March 2010). Our workshop on Language and Influence will explore how language works and how to use it to attain goals. The primary objective is to provide participants with a linguistic toolkit that will enable them to use language effectively and to defuse the most frequent difficulties in language use, such as ambiguity, analogy, argumentation, and suggestion. Another objective is to practice presentation skills. The leader will introduce participants to the art of rhetoric and encourage them to hone the art of “brief, trenchant and, if possible, witty” interventions. A study of visual language may be included in the workshop on request. Here, too, a toolkit of rhetorical devices is provided and applied to both photojournalism and branding.
Leadership and Decision Making (25-27 March 2010). How do we make decisions? Why are some decisions harder to make? What are the benefits and the risks of making decisions? Our workshop on Leadership and Decision Making addresses the issue of how to make decisions in politics, business, and everyday life, how to influence an audience, and how to exercise leadership. Course participants will learn how to define an issue, evaluate the setting, give priorities to options, and take action. They will discuss how to develop an alternative course of action and reach intermediate and final goals. Through an interactive presentation, role-play exercises, and self-evaluation, the participants will enhance their arguing skills, learn how to make rational choices, and how to motivate and influence.
Baku Summer Energy School
The Baku Summer Energy School in partnership with the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic will offer a certificate program in Baku, Azerbaijan, during 3 – 17 July 2010. The Baku Summer Energy School program brings together world-renowned scholars, academicians, and policy-makers to examine and gain a better understanding of global energy and environmental issues. The 2010 program will study a wide range of issues, such as fundamentals of energy; energy law; economics and politics of energy; environmental effects; and strategic management. A special focus of the program is the Caspian Basin, including regional pipeline network development; geopolitics of the Caspian; and the legal status and strategic outlook of the State Oil Company. The class is limited to 40 participants. Upon completion of the program, participants are issued a certificate by the Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy.
