Kenya sets new accelerated target for fiber rollout

The Kenyan government is accelerating its fiber optic rollout by using Kenya Power and Lighting Company’s infrastructure, running fiber cables alongside power lines instead of laying them underground. Eliud Owalo, Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications, and the Digital Economy, stated that this strategy will expedite the process, potentially meeting the 100,000-kilometer target within two years. Since the rollout resumed last year, 10,000 kilometers of fiber have already been installed, with Nia Fibre contracted for the project. Additionally, the government plans to deploy 25,000 WiFi hotspots nationwide, starting with markets and bus terminals to create digital marketplaces and boost connectivity for traders and entrepreneurs.
