the presentation of a publication from the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna:
“Can the United Nations be Taught?” The book compiles contributions from
senior UN officials, academics and students worldwide exploring how the UN
as a subject can best be addressed in the field of higher education.
Authors introduce innovative teaching initiatives about the UN system which
aim to bring about better understanding of UN operations in the real world.
In the forward to the publication, Gerhard Reiweger, Deputy Director of the
Diplomatic Academy of Vienna, points to the provocative double meaning of
the title: on the one hand, addressing the complexity of the subject
itself and the teaching process; but on the other hand, alluding to the
ultimate goal of learning, “which is to acquire, through critical analysis,
the competence to bring about changes for the better in real life.”
