MIKTA diplomacy – current developments and vision for the future

As a follow up on the first MIKTA event in Geneva, MIKTA diplomacy: New dynamism or more of the same?, this seminar will generate input to preparations for the Ministerial MIKTA meeting to be held in Seoul in May 2015. The seminar is being organised by the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea, DiploFoundation, and other partners including the permanent missions of Mexico, Indonesia, Turkey, and Australia.

Preparatory bakground policy brief: The MIKTA way forward: The potential, risk, and future of MIKTA diplomacy

Mexico, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Turkey, and Australia have developed a cooperation scheme within a framework called MIKTA. It is based on a mutual interest in strengthening multilateralism by supporting worldwide efforts in stability and prosperity, facilitating pragmatic and creative solutions to regional and international challenges, and implementing needed reforms in global governance structures.

In August 2014, DiploFoundation assisted MIKTA countries to raise awareness and receive input from the Geneva community regarding the potential of this framework by convening a seminar: MIKTA diplomacy: New dynamism or more of the same? A follow-up seminar on 24 April 2015 will build on the first MIKTA seminar in Geneva with the aim of generating input in preparations for the Ministerial MIKTA meeting to be held in Seoul in May 2015. The seminar is being organised by the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea, the current chair of MIKTA, and DiploFoundation. Other partners include the permanent missions of Mexico, Indonesia, Turkey, and Australia. Buffet lunch will be provided immediately after the seminar.

Objectives

Update and brief the Geneva policy community on progress with MIKTA developments.
Increase the visibility and outreach of the MIKTA co-operation framework in Geneva.
Profile MIKTA countries as co-operative partners in Geneva-based multilateral diplomacy.
Strengthen the functional links between MIKTA diplomacy and International Geneva.
Generate input from the Geneva policy community for MIKTA co-operation and the way forward.
