Gabon enforces Internet blockade and curfew due to election voting delays
Amid significant voting delays during a general election, Gabon’s government enacted measures such as blocking internet access and imposing a curfew. The opposition expressed concerns about the fairness of the election, aiming to disrupt President Ali Bongo’s attempt to extend his family’s long-standing rule of 56 years. President Ali Bongo Ondimba made this move after declaring his intention to run for a third term as the head of state in the oil-rich African nation.
Due to concerns over online disinformation, the Gabonese government has taken measures to address the situation. The government have temporarily suspended internet access and implemented a nighttime curfew starting from Sunday. This decision aims to prevent potential misconduct and ensure the safety of the entire population. The announcement was made via a statement broadcast on national television on Saturday evening.
