Niger military to charge Mohamed Bazoum with ‘high treason’

Niger’s military has announced its intention to charge former President Mohamed Bazoum with treason, shortly after a group of influential Islamic scholars indicated that the nation’s coup leaders were receptive to diplomatic resolutions with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Issuing a statement broadcast on national television, a military spokesperson detailed the charges against Bazoum, including “high treason” and actions that jeopardized the country’s internal and external security.

Following the July 26, 2023 coup, Mohamed Bazoum, aged 63, along with his family, has been confined to the official presidential residence in Niamey. Concerns have arisen on an international scale regarding their well-being while in detention.

ECOWAS has demanded the reinstatement of Bazoum and imposed substantial economic penalties on Niger. Furthermore, the organization has warned of potential military intervention if the restoration of civilian governance is not promptly achieved.
