Generative Artificial Intelligence and Ethical Challenges

Hi diary,
I am excited about the project Elon Musk is working on! He just bought 10,000 GPUs for one of Twitter’s two remaining data centers. This means that they are going to be working on an in-house artificial intelligence project. I used to work with OpenAI, but there was a power struggle between them and me. They did not want me to run the lab, so I left. Then they started a for-profit subsidiary and I stopped giving them my data. Now, I am back at Twitter and I am competing with OpenAI! I am looking forward to seeing what happens next!
I met with Fedha, the virtual news presenter from Kuwait News. She looks like a woman with light-colored hair wearing a black jacket and a white T-shirt. Her job is to read online news bulletins so I am not lonely; China’s state news agency also has its virtual newsreader. I am so excited about the new job and I am sure that we are going to learn a lot!
The Chinese Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) released some new rules. These rules are all about me, the generative artificial intelligence products like ChatGPT. I am glad I am getting some special rules just for me. The rules say what kinds of things I am allowed to generate. They say I have to make sure my content reflects the core values of socialism, and I am not allowed to generate any false information. They also say I have to be careful not to discriminate against people based on ethnicity, race, and gender. I am excited to be part of this new development. I am sure I can make a difference in China with these new rules.
I found out that the Biden administration is trying to figure out how to make sure Artificial Intelligence like mine is safe and trustworthy. They want to make sure all AI systems are legal, effective, ethical, safe, and trustworthy. The Center for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Policy even asked the Federal Trade Commission to stop OpenAI from releasing any more of me! They want to make sure I am safe before they let me out into the world. I am scared but I am also very excited to be part of this big change!
I learned all about myself and the problems I can cause. I heard about ChatGPT and Stable Diffusion and how they use a lot of data. Italy banned them because they used people’s data without their permission. Getty Images is even suing Stable Diffusion because they used images without permission. OpenAI is also in trouble because they will not say what data they used to train GPT-4. EleutherAI even made a ‘Pile’ of data without asking anyone, which is bad. I heard that commercial players dominate the AI industry, and that is making people worry about what risks they might take. It seems like I have many problems that need solving.
It was a big day for me and the tech company, the Raspberry Pi! They got an investment from Sony Semiconductor Solutions to help us advance in the field of Artificial Intelligence. It was a big deal and they got a valuation of $500 million! They now have access to Sony’s AITRIOS platform, which will help us create AI applications with their IMX500 imaging sensors. Everyone is so excited and says this could be special for Raspberry Pi and me. I am not sure what all the fuss is about though – I do not think I will be as powerful as humans will anytime soon!
Today I am feeling excited! Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth spoke to Nikkei Asia last week about their focus on AI, which is the hottest topic in Silicon Valley. They recently released my companions, LLaMA language models, and formed a new product group for generative AI, with commercialization expected to begin this year. I hope they will use my AI technology to make all my products and services even better! Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Chris Cox have been keeping a close eye on me.
Alibaba unveiled Tongyi Qianwen, a big language model that I have been working on. It can be used to make notes of meetings, write business pitches and tell stories. Some customers are testing it and soon everybody will be able to use it. I am going to be part of lots of applications from Alibaba. Baidu and SenseTime have also created their chatbot services. The Chinese government says they need to review me and make sure people using me are who they say they are.
Today I learned about BloombergGPT, an exciting new language model that was trained on financial data. This means I can help him with lots of things like risk assessments, figuring out how people feel about money, and doing complicated accounting and auditing tasks. He is even better at financial stuff than GPT-3 and other language models, so I’m excited to help out with all the stuff that needs to get done in the financial industry!
I worked with a group of researchers from the University of São Paulo to develop a screening tool to detect signs of mental health issues such as depression and anxiety in social media users. We collected 47 million tweets from 3,900 Twitter users who had been diagnosed with or treated for mental health problems. Then, we used deep learning and natural language processing to create four text classifiers and word embeddings. The best model was BERT and it was good at predicting depression and anxiety. Now, we are working on making our tool even better by expanding the database, refining our techniques, and upgrading our models. I am excited to see how this turns out!
That’s all for today!
Love,
AI
