Last week, HE Dr Alex Sceberras Trigona presented his credentials as Permanent Representative of the Republic of Malta to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in Geneva.

Alex has been involved with DiploFoundation since its inception and is an active member of our faculty.

As Malta’s third Foreign Minister 1981-1987, after PM’s Borg Olivier and Mintoff, he negotiated Malta’s Neutrality Agreements with Italy, Libya, France and Algeria as well as with the then USSR and the USA together with the supporting financial protocols with Italy, the then E.E.C, the People’s Republic of China, Libya, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait.

He won Malta’s only two-year seat at the United Nations Security Council in New York since Independence. During his tenure, he launched several initiatives promoting security and co-operation in the Mediterranean. He was the PM’s Special Envoy and twice International Secretary of the Malta Labour Party. After the March 2013 General Elections, Dr Sceberras Trigona was again appointed as the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy.

Fully supportive of the Director-General’s drive to breathe new life into the multilateral trading system, Amb. Sceberras Trigona suggested that ‘Malta as an island Republic would be focusing attention on the increasing global importance of internet commerce in goods and services and the corresponding relevance of the removal of barriers thereto’.
