The European Union (EU) is a regional intergovernmental organization aimed at enhancing economic and political cooperation among its 28 member states. It operates through various institutions like the European Parliament, the Council of the EU, and the European Commission, addressing a broad spectrum of policies including agriculture, competition, environment, and transport. These institutions create regulatory frameworks that member states must adopt, either directly through EU regulations or indirectly via national legislation through directives.
Digitally, the EU is dedicated to shaping policies on electronic communications, online privacy and data protection, cybersecurity, e-commerce, e-government, and intellectual property rights. The overarching goal is to establish a ‘digital single market’ to improve online access to digital goods and services, foster the growth of digital networks and services, and maximize the benefits of digitalization for Europe’s economy, industry, and employment. Additionally, the EU plays a significant role in global Internet governance, contributing to the work of the ITU, IGF, and ICANN, among others.
